新十両で西13枚目の朝紅龍（24＝高砂）が、七番相撲を制して4勝3敗と白星先行とした。
白鷹山のもろ手突きに対応。二本差して、そのまま土俵際まで持っていき力強く寄り切った。「相手がかましてきたので、合わせる形になった。日に日に落ち着いていっている」と手ごたえをにじませた。
日体大で2年連続アマチュア横綱に輝き、幕下10枚目格付け出しデビューから、所要2場所で新十両に昇進した大の里（23＝二所ノ関）が、初日から7連勝を飾り、勝ち越しに王手をかけた。
元大関で東前頭７枚目・高安（田子ノ浦）が１敗と首位の座を守った。くせ者の同９枚目・翠富士（伊勢ケ浜）に立ち合いで変化されたが、瞬時に対応。のど輪で起こして右をねじ込むと、左上手もつかんで腹ばいにさせた。
大関経験者で西前頭2枚目の朝乃山（29＝高砂）が、2日目の琴ノ若戦以来、5日ぶりの白星を挙げた。20年初場所以来、3年8カ月ぶりの顔合わせとなった前頭阿炎を押し出して3勝4敗。連敗を「4」で止めた。敗れていれば、19年春場所などに並ぶ、自己ワーストの5連敗となっていたところを踏みとどまった。8日目は、先場所初日に敗れた前頭明生と顔を合わせる。
7度目のかど番の大関貴景勝（27＝常盤山）は、2日目からの連勝が「5」で止まり、5勝2敗として優勝争いの先頭から後退した。
取組前の時点で対戦成績が15勝6敗と、合口の良い大関経験者の前頭正代が相手だったが、手痛い黒星となった。正代戦の連勝も「5」で止まった。
八角理事長「押せなくなるとああなる」辛抱しきれない時の貴景勝の癖に言及、敗因を指摘 大関貴景勝（27＝常盤山）が敗れ2敗に後退。優勝争いの先頭グループから役力士が消えた。 大関経験者の正代（31＝時津風）を立ち合いで強く当たったが押し込めず、左からいなして泳がせた。だが、それでも正対して応戦する相手に、辛抱しきれなかったのか、右から大きく振りかぶって張りにいった。
